@2THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI
======================
@1
Well, in a few words, this was Peter Davison's last episode, and he and
his new companion Peri stumbled into a bit of an arms conflict on Androzani
Major (or was it Minor?). They stumbled into raw spectrox (sp?), which was
refined and used as a youth drug, and were both poisoned. At the end of
the story, the conflict is resolved through bloodshed (with the principal
players killing each other off, a la HAMLET) as the Doctor manages to recover
the antidote to the poison affecting them. Numbed by the effects of the
poison, the Doctor carries Peri to the TARDIS, stumbling the whole time as
the whole planet is erupting around them (I don't recall the specifics
here, but the conditions were rather hazardous...someone correct me), and as
he reaches into his pocket to get the TARDIS key, he drops the vial containing
the antidote. It spills onto the ground, but he grabs it quickly enough to
save some of it. Safely inside the TARDIS, he gives Peri the rest of the
antidote, with none left for him, and collapses onto the TARDIS floor, musing
that he "might regenerate, I don't know." As he begins to slip away,
muttering that it "feels different this time", he hears and sees his old
companions encouraging him to stick it out and live, while the Master berates
him. The screen turns to a kaleidoscope of colour, and...
Colin Baker sits up, the new Doctor. Peri, who has recovered, stammers (as
she doesn't quite understand what has just occurred) as the new Doctor sits
up and inspects his new body. "I..I..I...", she stutters, and the Doctor
says "That's three Is in one sentence...makes you sound a rather egotistical
young girl." When Peri asks what happened, the Doctor coldly replies
"Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon." Not a trace of a smile on
his face, and the credits roll.
Great story, one of Peter Davison's best, and IMHO one of Colin Baker's best
bits (regardless of what he says in an interview).
Getting back to the point, this was one of two stories that really got me
interested in Doctor Who, after having watched bits and pieces while waiting
for Monty Python to come on (I get hooked on MORE shows this way...happened
with the Avengers too. :). THE FIVE DOCTORS was the other, and what appealed
to me was that you had several aspects of the same character working
together, and that this character could take on another form if its body were
damaged. I don't recall whether or not I knew Davison was going to become
Baker, but I was simply unaware as to the nature of the change, so when
Davison became Baker, as I described, it floored me, and then to see Baker
all but bite the head off of his assistant after having been so nice to her
in his other body, well, it just blew me away that the "new" Doctor was so
different. I've been hooked ever since...hell, I remember WTVS at one
point saying they were going to show the first episode featuring the second
Doctor, and I just HAD to see it to see more of this regeneration stuff.
Too bad it turned out to be "the first episode of the sixth season", THE
DOMINATORS. :)
[And I said "In a few words"?]
